How to Grow on WeChat Channels (视频号) and Official Accounts
Grow on WeChat Channels (视频号) and Official Accounts: friend-driven reach, follower perks, live and overseas limits.

Your group chat is full of people who live on WeChat. Your aunt forwards Channels videos at 2am, classmates in Shanghai share Official Account articles about internships, and every Chinese brand you like says "scan to follow" where a Western brand would say "link in bio". Then you open your own WeChat and see 63 contacts, no Channel, and no clue how anyone gets discovered in an app built around people who already know each other.
That confusion is fair. WeChat (微信, called Weixin in mainland China) grows differently from every app you are used to. Channels (视频号) leans on your friends' likes, Official Accounts (公众号) run on subscriptions and shares, and Moments, group chats, live streams and mini programs all feed each other. Once you understand the wiring, a small, loyal network can push a video much further than its size suggests.
This guide covers how Channels distribution works according to WeChat's own disclosures, the follower thresholds for creator features, Official Accounts versus service accounts, Moments, live streaming, mini programs and cross-linking, and the hard limits on registering from overseas, with the source named for each official rule.
Why WeChat grows differently
Start with the scale. Tencent's 2026 second quarter results report 1,439 million combined monthly active users across Weixin and WeChat. Almost everyone in mainland China with a smartphone is on it, along with a large share of the Chinese diaspora.
Weixin and WeChat are technically two services. Tencent describes them as separate but interoperable sister services, with Weixin for mainland China and WeChat for users elsewhere, and the Weixin privacy policy says users are distinguished by phone number: accounts registered with mainland numbers are Weixin users. You can message across the two without noticing, but some creator features depend on which side you are on, which matters a lot in the overseas section below.
The bigger difference is the graph. On TikTok or Instagram, strangers find you through a public algorithm. On WeChat, personal accounts and Moments are private to friends, and content mostly travels through people you already know: forwarded into chats, posted to Moments, liked on Channels. Search and recommendations exist and are growing, but the social graph is still the engine. That makes WeChat slow to start and very sticky once it works.
How WeChat Channels distributes videos
Channels is WeChat's short video and live streaming feed, which Tencent began testing in January 2020. Its distribution has one feature that sets it apart from Douyin or TikTok: likes travel to your friends.
What WeChat says about likes
The Weixin Privacy Protection Guidelines state that video content you like will also be recommended to your WeChat friends, and that you can remove the like, after which it will no longer be recommended to them. The same document says your WeChat name card is shown to a Channels account when you comment, message, like or follow it.
In 2025, WeChat went further and explained how Channels recommendations work. As reported by Tencent Cloud's developer news and other Chinese tech outlets, it described two systems: platform algorithm recommendations and friend recommendations. Content recommended by more friends gets a higher exposure ranking in the recommended feed, and WeChat added reminders such as 朋友今天都在看 ("your friends are watching today") and notes when several friends have recommended the same video.
What that means for your content
On Channels, a like is a small public endorsement to someone's contacts: their boss, their aunt, their old classmates. People think a second longer before giving it. The videos that travel are ones people are happy to be seen recommending:
- Useful content people forward to look helpful: practical tips, explainers, how-tos, local guides.
- Content with a clear stance people agree with and want their friends to know they agree with.
- Emotional content about family, work, home and memory that people feel says something for them.
Content that relies on shock or in-jokes does worse here than on Douyin, because liking it reveals something about the liker. If you want to compare the two models in depth, the Douyin growth guide explains the interest-based system Channels is often contrasted with.
The first push is always yours
Social recommendation amplifies a video that is already landing, so a video nobody finishes stays where it started. The early job is the same as anywhere: a strong opening, one clear point, a video people watch to the end. Then share it yourself to relevant group chats and Moments, because your own network is the first ring of friends whose likes can carry it outward.
Setting up Channels and the creator thresholds
Creating a Channel takes a minute from the Discover tab. The interesting part is what unlocks as you grow. WeChat's Channels Creator Rights Guide (微信视频号创作者权益指南) groups features by effective follower count:
| Effective followers | Features listed in WeChat's Creator Rights Guide |
|---|---|
| 0 | Product showcase, live gifting, professional verification, enterprise and organisation verification, original content protection, content boosting (内容加热), collections, film and TV creation licences |
| 100 | Live selling (直播带货) and the creator revenue share plan (创作分成计划), which shows ads in the comment area of original videos |
| 1,000 | Interest verification, short video product sharing, paid video tasks with Tencent Advertising, and the Channels brand collaboration marketplace (互选平台) |
| 10,000 | Gold V badge for accounts with interest verification |
Several features carry extra conditions. Live gifting and live selling both require you to be at least 18, to have passed real-name verification and to have opened Channels live streaming. Interest verification needs at least one post in the last 30 days, a filled-in bio, more than 1,000 effective followers and consistent original content in your field. Enterprise and organisation verification on Channels requires an already verified Official Account with the same name, which is the first of several ways WeChat ties its products together.
Paying for reach the official way
Content boosting is WeChat's own promotion tool. According to the Creator Rights Guide, creators can use traffic coupons or WeChat Beans (微信豆) to boost selected original videos, choosing goals such as likes and comments, follows or plays. It is available from day one to accounts in good standing, and it is the route that stays inside the rules.
Declare original work and use collections
The Creator Rights Guide says Channels encourages and protects original content with extra traffic, and acts against reposted and copied videos. When you publish, turn on the original declaration (原创声明) toggle, which commits you to the content being your own work. If someone reuploads your video or impersonates you, you can report the video or the account from its share or profile menu. For series content, use collections (合集) from the Channels Assistant on desktop, which group related videos so viewers can binge the next episode. The guide warns that collections containing marketing diversion or videos unrelated to the collection theme can lose the feature, so keep each collection tight.
Official Accounts: 公众号 versus service accounts
Official Accounts are WeChat's publishing platform: long-form articles, images, audio and video pushed to followers, with menus, auto-replies and links into mini programs. There are two types, and the naming changed recently.
In November 2024, WeChat renamed subscription accounts (订阅号) to 公众号 across the app and the platform, as Woshipm (人人都是产品经理) reported at the time. Tencent's developer documentation now splits its guides into 公众号 (formerly subscription accounts) and service accounts (服务号). Older English guides still call them subscription accounts and service accounts.
| 公众号 (formerly subscription account) | Service account (服务号) | |
|---|---|---|
| Push notifications | One mass notification per day | Four mass notifications per calendar month |
| Typical owner | Creators, media, individuals and organisations in mainland China | Companies and organisations |
| Strengths | Frequent publishing, content-led growth | Advanced interfaces and payments after verification, customer service tools |
| Open to overseas entities? | No | Yes, in supported regions, one account per entity |
The push limits come from Tencent's customer service page on mass messaging rules. A 公众号 can turn on the mass notification once per day, and a service account four times per natural month, with counts that reset and never accumulate. Posts published without a notification still appear on the account's profile page; followers just are not alerted. There is no cap on how many followers a message reaches, but you can only push to followers.
Distribution beyond your subscribers
For years an Official Account article reached mainly its subscribers plus whoever they forwarded it to. That has been shifting. Chinese tech outlet 36Kr reported in 2025 that WeChat had been raising the weight of friend recommendations in how Official Account articles are distributed, a direction that started with the 看一看 (Top Stories) feature in 2017. A small account with an article people genuinely share now has more paths to strangers than it did. Separately, 36Kr reported in late 2024 that service account messages were folded into a single folder in the chat list, which reduced the visibility edge service accounts used to have.
Writing articles people forward
Because friend recommendations now feed Official Account distribution, the question to ask about every article is whether a reader would put their name on it by sharing it. A few habits help:
- Write a specific headline that tells readers exactly what they get. Tencent's mass messaging rules cap titles at 64 bytes, about 32 Chinese characters, so every word has to earn its place.
- Lead with the most useful or most surprising point, since many readers decide in the first screen whether to keep going.
- Use your outsider angle. An overseas student explaining a visa process step by step, or a foreign chef explaining Chinese ingredients to a home audience, offers something domestic accounts cannot.
- End with one clear action: follow, watch the linked Channels video, or join a group.
Publish on a schedule your readers can learn, and use the daily notification on a 公众号 for your best pieces instead of everything you post.
Earning from an Official Account
- Ad revenue (流量主): Tencent's advertising guide says an Official Account can apply to become an ad publisher once it reaches 100 followers. Many older articles quote 500, so check the current guide in your back end.
- Tips (赞赏): readers can tip articles marked original.
- Sponsored posts and commerce: brand deals, product links and mini program shops.
Moments and group chats: the distribution you control
Moments (朋友圈) is WeChat's friends-only feed, which is exactly why it works: a post there is a personal recommendation to people who know you. Group chats do the same job at community scale, and Chinese marketers call the audience you own through them private domain traffic (私域流量).
How creators use them without being annoying
- Share your Channels video or article to Moments with one line on why it matters to you. A bare link reads like an ad.
- Keep Moments posting light. Friends mute contacts who post promotional content all day.
- Build or join group chats around your niche: a study abroad group, a language exchange group, a city expat group. Share when it is relevant to the group, and contribute in between.
- Put your Channels and Official Account in every bio you have, including your personal WeChat signature.
For brands, WeCom (企业微信, Tencent's business messaging app) lets staff add customers as WeChat contacts and keep them with the company when staff change. If you have run a WhatsApp community, the logic will feel familiar, and the WhatsApp Channels growth guide covers the closest Western equivalent.
Live streaming on Channels
Live streaming is where Channels creators often earn first, because it combines gifting, selling and real-time connection with your network.
Requirements from WeChat's Creator Rights Guide
- Live gifting (直播打赏): available with zero followers if you are 18 or older, have passed real-name verification, have opened Channels live and have no violations. Enterprise and organisation verified accounts do not currently support gifting.
- Live selling (直播带货): unlocks at 100 effective followers, with the same age, real-name and live conditions, linked to products in your showcase.
- Live previews (直播预告): scheduled-stream announcements that followers can sign up for, which help you build an audience before you go live.
Making live work
Announce streams in advance through a preview, your Official Account and your group chats. Go live at a regular time so people build a habit. Greet viewers by name, since many arrive because a friend tapped into the stream. A live session also shows up in friends' feeds when people they know are watching, so the first ten viewers matter more than you might expect.
Overseas creators should test before planning a schedule. Users outside mainland China have reported a message saying live streaming is not supported in their current country or region (当前国家/地区暂不支持发起直播). WeChat does not publish a country list that I could find, so verify on your own account.
Mini programs and cross-linking
WeChat's products are designed to point at each other, and the creators who grow fastest wire them together deliberately.
- Channels to Official Account: link your Official Account on your Channels profile, and embed Channels videos inside articles.
- Official Account to Channels: add your Channel to article footers and menus, and announce lives through the account.
- Mini programs (小程序): lightweight apps that run inside WeChat, used for shops, bookings, quizzes and tools. Official Account articles and menus can open them directly, so a reader can go from article to checkout without leaving the app.
- Search: WeChat search surfaces Official Account articles and Channels videos, so consistent naming across your account, Channel and topics makes you easier to find.
- Verification links: as noted above, Channels enterprise verification requires a verified Official Account with the same name, so choose one name and use it everywhere from the start.
Registering from overseas: the real limits
This is where many international creators get stuck, so here are the rules as Tencent states them.
Official Accounts for overseas organisations
Tencent's customer service page on overseas service account registration says that, besides mainland accounts, some overseas regions can register service accounts by choosing the company's registration location at mp.weixin.qq.com. If your region has no option, it is not open yet. The same page says:
- An overseas entity can register one account, and the entity types listed are companies, sole proprietors, schools, government bodies and other organisations.
- Overseas accounts currently support only the service account type.
- The account must pass WeChat verification before it can be used.
- Personal WeChat users inside and outside mainland China can follow these accounts.
Tencent's overseas verification FAQ sets the fee at US$99 per application, a one-off review charge that does not depend on success, so a rejected application means paying again. Review takes 7 to 15 working days after payment and complete documents. Payment works through WeChat Pay or major international cards.
Individual creators
Tencent's overseas registration page lists organisations only, with no overseas individual route. In practice, an individual without mainland Chinese ID usually cannot open a 公众号 in their own name. Do not borrow a friend's identity to register: the account legally belongs to whoever passed verification, and getting it back later can be impossible.
Channels on overseas accounts
Overseas users with WeChat accounts registered on foreign numbers have reported that creating a Channel, posting or going live is blocked with a region message, while others have no trouble. WeChat does not publish a clear rule for this, and the requirements for monetisation features include real-name verification. Test your own account before you build a plan around Channels, and have a fallback platform ready.
WeChat's rules on fake engagement
The WeChat Channels Operating Rules (微信视频号运营规范) have a section on fake volume and fake followers (刷量刷粉). It prohibits using any abnormal means to obtain fake data, including followers, likes, comments and views, including through third-party operating platforms and plug-in software. Tencent's advertising rules for mini program ad publishers similarly penalise accounts that reached thresholds through fake traffic such as zombie users, exploits or plug-ins.
On WeChat the logic also works against you. Channels pushes liked videos to the liker's friends, so a fake like from an account with no real friends spreads nowhere. Inflated numbers on an Official Account show up as a huge follower count with tiny reads and no shares, which any brand evaluating you will spot. The only signal that compounds here is real people choosing to recommend you.
LitFame does not sell services for WeChat or any Chinese platform. If you also grow on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube and want help there, LitFame's services cover those platforms, and the guide to Chinese social media platforms helps you decide where WeChat fits next to Xiaohongshu, Douyin and Weibo.
A 30-day WeChat plan
- Week 1: fix your profile, signature and name. Check whether you can create a Channel and go live on your account. If you represent an organisation, start Official Account verification now, since overseas review takes up to 15 working days.
- Week 2: post three to five Channels videos built to be recommended: useful, clear, one idea each. Share each one to one relevant group and to Moments with a personal line.
- Week 3: publish your first Official Account article if you have one, embed a Channels video in it, and link the account from your Channel. Join or start a niche group chat.
- Week 4: review which videos friends-of-friends actually liked, make more like them, and try one short live stream announced through a live preview.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the WeChat Channels algorithm work?
Channels combines two systems, according to WeChat's 2025 explanation: platform algorithm recommendations and friend recommendations. The Weixin Privacy Protection Guidelines say videos you like are recommended to your WeChat friends, and content recommended by more friends gets higher exposure, with reminders such as "your friends are watching today".
How many followers do you need to make money on WeChat Channels?
WeChat's Creator Rights Guide lists live gifting at zero followers if you are 18 or older and real-name verified, live selling and the creator revenue share plan at 100 effective followers, and paid video tasks and the brand collaboration marketplace at 1,000. Interest-verified accounts get a gold V badge at 10,000.
What is the difference between a WeChat 公众号 and a service account?
A 公众号, called a subscription account until WeChat renamed it in November 2024, can send one mass notification per day. A service account can send four per calendar month but gets more advanced interfaces and payments after verification. Overseas organisations can only register service accounts.
Can a foreigner open a WeChat Official Account?
Overseas organisations can, in supported regions: Tencent allows one service account per overseas entity, which must pass verification at US$99 per application before use. Tencent lists no overseas route for individuals, so a foreign individual without mainland ID usually cannot open an Official Account in their own name.
Can I use WeChat Channels outside China?
You can watch Channels from anywhere, but creating, posting and live streaming can be restricted for accounts registered with foreign numbers. Users abroad have reported region messages such as live streaming not being supported in their country or region. WeChat does not publish a list, so test on your own account.
Is buying followers or likes allowed on WeChat?
No. The WeChat Channels Operating Rules prohibit obtaining fake followers, likes, comments or views by any abnormal means, including third-party platforms and plug-ins. Because Channels distributes liked videos to the liker's friends, fake likes also spread nowhere. LitFame does not sell WeChat services.
How many people use WeChat?
Tencent's 2026 second quarter results report 1,439 million combined monthly active users of Weixin and WeChat. Tencent reports the two services together, and publishes the figure in every quarterly results announcement.
