How to Grow on Douyin: China's TikTok Explained
Grow on Douyin as a foreign creator: real-name rules, traffic pools, DOU+, Xingtu brand deals and live selling.

You found Douyin (抖音) through a friend's screen recording, or you were one of the millions of TikTok users who went looking for a backup app in January 2025 and kept hearing the same thing: the Chinese version is faster, funnier and weirdly better at selling stuff. So you downloaded it, scrolled for an hour, and then hit a wall. The app wants a phone number, then a real-name check, and the button to go live just isn't there for you. Meanwhile someone you know from a language exchange is apparently pulling brand deals on it.
That mix of FOMO and confusion is normal. Douyin looks like TikTok and shares its parent company, but it lives inside China's rules, payment rails and creator economy. Most of it is learnable, and the rules are published if you know where to look.
This guide covers how Douyin differs from TikTok, what the phone and real-name requirements mean for you, how the traffic pool model creators talk about actually maps onto what Douyin has said about its algorithm, how DOU+ paid promotion works, how the Xingtu (星图) brand marketplace decides who can take deals, how live commerce permissions unlock, and the community rules that get accounts banned.
Douyin and TikTok: same parent, different apps
ByteDance (字节跳动) launched Douyin in China in September 2016 and released TikTok for international markets the following year. Reuters has described Douyin as TikTok's sister app in China. They share design DNA and a lot of underlying technology, but they are separate products with separate accounts, separate content libraries and separate rulebooks. A TikTok account does not log you into Douyin, and nothing you post on one shows up on the other.
TikTok is not available in mainland China. Douyin serves that market, and search, shopping, local deals and long livestreams sit alongside its For You style feed.
| Feature | Douyin (抖音) | TikTok |
|---|---|---|
| Market | Mainland China | International (not available in mainland China) |
| Account sign-up | Phone number, with real-name verification (实名认证) required for live, selling and payouts | Email or phone; ID checks mainly for age and monetisation |
| Paid boost for your own posts | DOU+ (now labelled 上热门 in the app) | Promote |
| Brand deal marketplace | Xingtu (巨量星图, xingtu.cn) | TikTok One (formerly Creator Marketplace) |
| Shopping | Deeply built in: product sharing (电商带货), Douyin Mall, merchant stores on 抖店 | TikTok Shop in supported markets |
| Rulebook | 抖音社区自律公约 (Douyin Community Self-Discipline Convention) plus Chinese regulation | TikTok Community Guidelines plus local law |
| Editing app from the same company | Jianying (剪映) | CapCut |
The difference you'll feel first is intent. People on Douyin shop and search inside the app readily, so a video that teaches, reviews or demonstrates something often outlives a pure meme. If you already understand how the TikTok algorithm works, a lot of that knowledge transfers. The audience, the language and the commercial plumbing do not.
Signing up: phone numbers, real-name checks and foreign users
Why real-name verification exists
China's Cybersecurity Law (网络安全法, Article 24) requires online services that let people publish information to collect real identity information from users. That is why Chinese platforms ask for a phone number and an identity check. On Douyin, real-name verification (实名认证) sits in the path to the features that matter for growth: going live, selling products and withdrawing money. Douyin's e-commerce creator rules, as revised in April 2025, state that you must complete real-name verification and be at least 18 to switch on product sharing.
What foreign users can and can't do
During the January 2025 rush of TikTok users onto Chinese apps, rumours spread that Douyin had opened international registration. Douyin Group vice-president Li Liang responded on Weibo that an overseas IP address does not mean an account is an overseas registration, and said Douyin had already handled more than 10,000 accounts that impersonated foreign users to farm followers. Southern Metropolis Daily (南方都市报) reported at the time that Douyin had not opened overseas registration. Its reporter found a foreign phone number option at sign-up, and noted user reports that among the real-name methods offered, the only one built for foreigners was China's Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card (外国人永久居留证), not a foreign passport.
Since then, creators and livestream agencies outside China have posted that passport-based verification works for some nationalities. I could not find an official Douyin help page that lists which foreign documents are accepted, so treat those claims as unconfirmed and check the 实名认证 screen in your own app. What the options look like there is the real answer for your account.
In practice, international creators tend to land in one of these situations:
- Living in China with a residence document Douyin accepts. You can usually verify yourself and unlock most features, and you'll be paid through Chinese payment rails in your own name.
- Abroad with a phone number and no accepted ID. You can often post, but live, selling and payouts may stay locked.
- Working through a guild (公会), MCN or brand partner. Many foreign streamers go live through an agency that handles onboarding. Read the contract carefully: who owns the account, what cut they take, and whose identity sits on the verification.
One hard line: never verify with somebody else's ID or buy a ready-made verified account. Douyin's September 2025 announcement on online "water armies" (网络水军) lists account trading as a prohibited service, and an account whose real-name holder isn't you is an account you can lose overnight with no appeal that works in your favour.
How Douyin distributes your videos: the traffic pool model
Ask any Chinese creator coach how Douyin works and you'll hear about traffic pools (流量池). The story goes like this: every new video gets shown to a small starting batch of viewers, the system watches how they react, and videos that perform well get promoted into progressively larger pools. Courses often attach specific view counts to each tier, an "eight-level traffic pool" with a few hundred views at the bottom and millions at the top.
Treat that as a mental model. Douyin has never published a tier chart with view counts, and the numbers in those courses vary from one coach to the next. What Douyin has published is its own explanation. In March 2025 it launched a Safety and Trust Center website (抖音安全与信任中心, 95152.douyin.com) which, according to coverage in Banyuetan (半月谈) and other outlets, explains that the recommendation algorithm predicts the probability of different user behaviours and uses multi-objective modelling to rank content, with the platform's governance system constraining what the algorithm can push.
Put the two together and the useful takeaways are the same either way:
- Your first viewers decide a lot. Whether you picture pools or probability scores, early watch-through, rewatches, comments, shares, saves and follows feed the next round of distribution.
- Negative signals count too. Fast swipes away, "not interested" taps and reports pull a video down.
- The first second matters more than your intro. Douyin viewers are ruthless swipers. Open on the payoff or the question, then explain.
- Consistency trains the system on who you're for. Creators widely recommend staying in one vertical (垂直) niche so recommendations find the right audience. DOU+'s own site echoes this, advising "垂直内容" (vertical content) as part of good publishing habits.
Distribution can also stall because of reused clips, watermarks from other apps, or a moderation warning. If your numbers fall off a cliff, check the violation records in your creator centre first. If you're still choosing a platform, the guide to growing on Kuaishou covers a rival that distributes very differently.
Making content Douyin viewers actually watch
The format rules are familiar from TikTok: vertical 9:16, sound on, a strong hook. The details that trip up international creators are cultural and linguistic.
Language and subtitles
Burned-in Chinese subtitles (字幕) are close to mandatory if you speak another language on camera. Jianying (剪映), ByteDance's Chinese editing app, has auto-captioning that handles simplified Chinese well. Get a native speaker to check your on-screen text, because a wrong character reads like a typo in a headline.
Search is a growth channel
Douyin users search inside the app for recipes, product reviews, travel spots and how-tos. Put the key phrase in your title, your on-screen text and your spoken script. Ocean Engine's trend tool, Juliang Suanshu (巨量算数), shows keyword popularity on Douyin and is a quick way to check whether people actually search the phrase you picked.
Niches that suit international creators
- Cultural exchange and daily life. Your country's food, school life, prices, holidays and habits, told with curiosity and respect.
- Language teaching. Short lessons work best when they're specific: one phrase, one mistake, one situation.
- Skills that cross borders. Cooking, fitness, music, art and tech reviews need little translation.
- Local discovery for people in China. The 同城 (same city) feed surfaces nearby content, which helps if you live in a Chinese city and review restaurants or spots there.
Avoid the lazy version of "foreigner content". After the January 2025 impersonation crackdown, reposted foreign clips with new captions are exactly what moderators hunt. Original footage of you, in your own voice, is your strongest trust signal.
Timing
Your audience is on China Standard Time (UTC+8). Lunch breaks and evenings are commonly cited as busy windows, but Douyin publishes no official best time. After a few weeks, check when your followers are active in the creator centre (抖音创作者中心) and schedule around that.
DOU+: Douyin's official paid promotion
DOU+ (people say "Dou jia", 抖加) is Douyin's own tool for paying to push a video or a livestream to more viewers. In the app it now appears as 上热门 ("get on trending") in the share menu of a video. Douyin's official DOU+ site describes it as a content heating and marketing product for both videos and live rooms, with four goals you can pick from:
- 账号经营 (account growth): more plays, likes and comments, followers, or profile visits.
- 获取客户 (customer acquisition): collecting sales leads, for businesses.
- 商品引流 (product traffic): sending viewers to third-party product pages.
- 直播间推广 (live room promotion): pushing viewers into a stream that's running.
Douyin's developer documentation lists a starting budget of 100 yuan per order. The flow on the DOU+ site is simple: choose the video, choose a goal, duration, targeting and budget, pay, then wait for the order to pass review before it runs. You can also buy DOU+ for someone else's video.
What DOU+ will and won't accept
Every order is reviewed, and the DOU+ site runs a dedicated rules course (DOU+规范篇). Third-party guides that summarise rejections point to the same causes: reposted footage, hard selling, contact details or off-platform redirects, low-quality content, and minors on camera. A rejection tells you that video fails the bar for paid promotion, and the video itself can stay up.
How much DOU+ gets you
Older Chinese guides quote fixed plays per 100 yuan, but Douyin's current DOU+ site publishes no rate, and results depend on targeting and the video itself. Copy the DOU+ site's own case study: test 100 to 200 yuan on a video already performing organically, then add budget only if the numbers justify it. Boosting a weak video mostly buys proof that it's weak.
DOU+ is the legitimate way to pay for reach on Douyin. Buying followers, likes or views from outside sellers is something Douyin treats as fraud, covered in the rules section below.
Xingtu (星图): where brand deals live
Juliang Xingtu (巨量星图) is the official marketplace where brands hire Douyin creators. Brands browse creators and place orders, the platform reviews scripts and videos, and payment runs through Xingtu.
Xingtu's own new-creator handbook says joining has no follower requirement, only that your content is healthy and follows Douyin's community rules. What you can actually earn depends on which task types you unlock, and each one has its own bar. The handbook also introduces "有效粉丝" (effective followers), a filtered count Douyin uses for commercial features, which you can check in the creator centre settings.
| Xingtu task type | What it is | Requirements in Xingtu's handbook |
|---|---|---|
| 抖音指派任务 (assigned video task) | A brand picks you and pays your quoted price for a video | 100,000+ Douyin followers, 500+ effective followers |
| 抖音短视频投稿任务 (open video submissions) | One brief, many creators submit; paid by results such as plays or conversions | 10,000+ followers, 500+ effective followers |
| 图文一口价 / 图文投稿 (image post tasks) | Paid image-text posts, assigned or open | 1,000+ followers, 500+ effective followers |
| 直播指派任务 (assigned live task) | Brand-awareness livestream, no shopping cart | 1,000+ followers, 200+ effective followers, at least 3 streams of 25+ minutes in the last 14 days, no violations in 30 days |
| 招募任务 (recruitment task) | Brands hire many mid-size creators at once | Between 10,000 and 5 million followers, 500+ effective followers |
Two rules matter for your long-term standing. First, Xingtu bans private deals: the handbook says commercial content arranged off-platform can cost you credit score and your order permissions. Second, Xingtu gives each creator a credit score that starts at 70 out of 100, and penalties on your Douyin account flow through to your Xingtu status. Once you pass 100,000 followers you can switch on a "找我合作上星图" button on your profile so brands can approach you directly through the marketplace.
Withdrawals follow the same real-name logic as the rest of Douyin: solo creators withdraw themselves, company accounts settle to a business bank account, and MCN-signed creators get paid through their MCN.
Live streaming and live commerce
Live is where Douyin's money is loudest, and it comes in two flavours: gifts and selling.
Gifting
Viewers buy Douyin coins (抖币) and send virtual gifts during a stream. Hosts receive the value as 音浪 (yinlang, "sound waves"). Douyin doesn't publish a public rate card. Chinese creator guides commonly report 10 yinlang to 1 yuan before the platform's share, with solo hosts often keeping around half, and guild-signed hosts quoting different splits. Treat those as reported figures and look at your own earnings page.
Gifting is tightly regulated. China's 2022 opinions on live-stream tipping and minor protection, published by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), bar platforms from letting minors tip and from offering host accounts to anyone under 16, with guardian consent required for 16 and 17 year olds. In April 2026 the CAC issued a further notice on tipping that requires platforms to publish tipping rules, set conditions before an account can earn from tips, give users spending limits and reminders, and rein in tip-based leaderboards. Begging for gifts aggressively is a fast way to lose the feature.
Selling: from 商品橱窗 to 电商带货
The creator side of Douyin shopping used to be called 商品橱窗 (product showcase). In late 2023 the in-app entry was renamed 电商带货 (e-commerce selling), and you'll see both names online. Douyin E-commerce revised its creator onboarding rules effective 17 April 2025. For personal accounts, the thresholds reported by Southern Metropolis Daily and trade outlet Dianshangpai (电商派) are:
| Effective followers (有效粉丝) | What unlocks for a personal account |
|---|---|
| Any (0 and up) | Basic showcase (橱窗) selling only |
| 200+ | Selling in your livestreams |
| 500+ | Selling in short videos, plus showing the showcase on your profile and in comments |
| 1,000+ | Selling in image-text posts |
Business and individual-trader accounts need 1,000 followers for live and video selling. You must be real-name verified and 18 or older, and the same reporting says accounts with no sales for 180 straight days lose the permission until they reapply. A deposit is part of the setup, and the 2025 rules allow a limited trial before you pay it in full. Rules like these change, so check the 电商带货 section of your creator centre before you plan around a number.
Running your own store is a separate step. 抖店 (Douyin Shop) is the merchant backend, built for registered businesses. Most creators start by selling other merchants' products for commission.
What a good selling stream looks like
- Pick a small number of products you've actually used and can demonstrate on camera.
- Keep a regular schedule so followers learn when to show up.
- Answer questions out loud and by name.
- Promote the stream in a short video beforehand. DOU+'s live room goal exists for exactly this.
Community rules and the fake engagement crackdown
Douyin's core rulebook is the 抖音社区自律公约 (Douyin Community Self-Discipline Convention), published in the rule centre at douyin.com/rule. It applies across the Douyin family of apps, including the lite and Volcano versions, and sits alongside separate rules for minors, e-commerce and specific industries such as health and law.
Fake engagement gets special attention, and Douyin publishes its enforcement numbers:
- Douyin E-commerce said in a February 2025 governance announcement, as reported by Beijing Daily, that it cleared 1.6 million water army accounts in 2024 and intercepted more than 2.5 million fake comments a day, targeting bought followers, likes, live-room viewers and gifts produced through group control and crowdsourcing.
- In April 2025 Douyin published rules on "malicious marketing accounts" (恶意营销号) covering ten categories of violation, and introduced an account health score (账号健康分). By June 2026, according to China Daily's coverage, Douyin said it had handled 3.874 million violating accounts and 29.56 million videos under those rules.
- Douyin's September 2025 special announcement on water armies, reported by Xinhua, listed fake traffic through bought followers, likes, views and comments as one of four core categories, with more than 40,000 videos removed, more than 30,000 accounts banned or muted, and over 30 suspects detained by police.
- Douyin has also sued fake engagement providers. The same China Daily report says its case against the crowdsourced boosting app 轻抖 was selected by China's Supreme People's Court as a typical unfair competition case.
Penalties run from comments visible only to you, through reduced reach, to permanent bans. For a foreign creator with one verified account, a ban is close to final. Do not buy followers, views or likes for Douyin from anyone. LitFame doesn't sell Douyin services, and the honest reason is that the risk on this platform outweighs anything a boost could do for you.
Youth protection is strict too
In September 2021, Reuters reported, Douyin moved real-name users under 14 into a youth mode they cannot exit, limited to 40 minutes a day between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. If your content skews young, expect closer moderation, and keep minors off camera in anything you boost or sell through.
A realistic 90-day plan for international creators
- Week 1: set up properly. Register with your own phone number, see which real-name options your app offers, write your profile in Chinese and English, and read the community convention once.
- Weeks 1 to 4: post consistently in one niche. Chinese subtitles on every video, and compare each opening second against retention in your creator centre.
- Weeks 4 to 8: find your search terms. Use Juliang Suanshu and search suggestions to pick phrases people look for, and build series around them.
- Weeks 6 to 10: test DOU+ carefully. Only on videos already beating your average, starting at the minimum, with one goal per test.
- Weeks 8 to 12: unlock commercial features. Watch your effective follower count. Try a short weekly live once you're eligible, and join Xingtu so you're visible when you cross the task thresholds.
Keep your other platforms growing in parallel. Douyin audiences can't easily follow you to TikTok or YouTube, and a verification problem can freeze a Douyin account fast. If your main income runs through TikTok, LitFame's TikTok services can help that side of your presence while you build Douyin the slow, organic way. For the big picture across every Chinese platform, start with the Chinese social media platforms guide, and if lifestyle content is your thing, the Xiaohongshu (RedNote) growth guide is the natural companion to this one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Douyin the same app as TikTok?
No. ByteDance owns both, but they are separate apps with separate accounts and content. Douyin launched in China in September 2016 and serves mainland China, while TikTok launched internationally the following year and is not available in mainland China. Your TikTok login and followers do not carry over to Douyin.
Can foreigners create a Douyin account?
Usually you can register with a phone number, including foreign numbers, but features such as going live, selling and withdrawing money need real-name verification. In January 2025 Douyin said it had not opened overseas registration, and reporters found the foreigner option was China's permanent resident ID card. Some creators report passport verification working since then, so check the options in your own app.
How much does DOU+ cost?
Douyin's developer documentation lists a starting budget of 100 yuan per DOU+ order. You choose a goal, duration, targeting and amount, and the order runs after it passes review. Douyin does not publish a fixed number of views per yuan, so test small on videos that already perform well before spending more.
How many followers do you need for Xingtu brand deals on Douyin?
Joining Xingtu has no follower requirement, according to its new-creator handbook, but each task type has its own bar. Assigned brand videos need 100,000 followers, open video submission tasks need 10,000, and image-post tasks need 1,000, each with at least 500 effective followers. Live tasks have separate streaming-activity requirements.
How many followers do you need to sell products on Douyin?
Under the creator rules Douyin E-commerce revised in April 2025, personal accounts can sell in livestreams with 200 effective followers, in short videos with 500, and in image-text posts with 1,000, plus basic showcase selling from zero. You also need real-name verification and must be 18 or older. Check the 电商带货 section of your creator centre for the current rules.
Are Douyin traffic pools real?
Traffic pools are a popular creator model, and Douyin has never published official tiers or view counts for them. Douyin's Safety and Trust Center explains that its algorithm predicts the likelihood of user behaviours and ranks content using multi-objective modelling. Either way, strong early engagement and watch time help a video reach more people.
Will buying followers get my Douyin account banned?
It can, and Douyin enforces this hard. Its 2025 announcements list bought followers, likes, views and comments as fake traffic, with penalties from limited reach to permanent bans, and it has reported clearing millions of violating accounts. Use DOU+, Douyin's official paid promotion tool, if you want to pay for reach.
